How To Foster–A Guide For The Novice

So, you are Foster-curious….you’ve heard of it, you know all the rescues need fosters, but just don’t know what’s involved and if you can do it.

We are here to tell you…yes, you can. If not today, maybe tomorrow. And if not a full-time gig, maybe you can temporarily foster over the holidays. Get a taste, with a definite end date when the husky goes back to boarding or the “back from vacation” foster. (Note: You still need to meet our normal requirements and complete the training for insurance purposes.) All the details for our process are found at https://texashuskyrescue.org/all-about-fostering/.

To begin, we provide all the supplies you need–crate, bowls, food, and most importantly EMOTIONAL and PRACTICAL support from our crack pack of experts. Through our Facebook volunteer pages, there is the equivalent of CENTURIES of experience with multiple huskies. So, you are definitely not in it alone. Your pack has your back!

Second, we match you with a good fit for your pack. We have so many dogs needing fosters, we can get a good match for your situation.

Before you take the plunge, you might wonder what you DO with the dog. If you have other dogs, how do you integrate your foster? That will be part of the matching discussion with the foster counselor to ensure success from the beginning. Providing structure is very important, and we certainly encourage regular enrichment activities.

What kind of enrichment activities are good? Anything you do with your pack is a good start. Of course, regular walks are a must, and good practice for the huskies. Some dogs appear to have NEVER been leashed, but they can learn good manners with structure and repetition. Taking them to dog-friendly stores is good, too. Winkle (left) and Poppi (right) are enjoying their excursions.

You can even work with agility courses to burn some of that energy. This is Bolt (we know….he doesn’t look like a husky, but he is!) perfecting his ramp technique (note the distance from the fence for his safety!).

And you will take your foster to Meet and Greet events hosted in the DFW and San Antonio areas. There aren’t any planned for the remainder of this year, but it gives the foster dog a chance to meet prospective adopters.

And, really, all you need is time and attention to their needs, with a dose of love and lots of patience (and a pretty high tolerance for squeaky noises in some cases).

Please consider opening your home to a foster dog. You will forever be part of their story and their success. No matter where they go, there will be a part of you with them as well.

Winkle, Poppi, and Bolt are in foster homes, but are ready for adoption. Find out more at https://texashuskyrescue.org/adoptables/
